Elephant Magazine – Issue 48: Autumn Winter 2022
Established in 2010, Elephant celebrates creativity and contemporary culture in the visual arts.
We cover the international art world, with a focus on emerging artists, designers and photographers.
Elephant’s Autumn Winter 2022 issue looks at the past, present and future of art, with interviews with the likes of Anthea Hamilton, Zadie Xa, Ming Smith, William Kentridge and Lisa Reihana sitting alongside an array of other revealing features from images of pre-war Ukraine to a photo feature exploring the modern experience of Black masculinity.
“I think that we’re both constructing ourselves,” Anthea Hamilton suggests, as she talks to fellow creator Zadie Xa in the special artist-on-artist encounter piece in Elephant’s Autumn Winter 2022 issue. Together our cover stars discuss everything from the politics of pop culture to the rich potential of self-mythology. They also appear together in a dynamic photoshoot, complete with red contact lenses, sharp wigs and body-morphing fashion.
Also featuring in revealing Encounters interviews are Ming Smith, William Kentridge, and Lisa Reihana. Elsewhere in the issue Sadie Barnette, Motoyuki Daifu, Melike Kara, Amanda Moström and Bruno Zhu explore notions of healing and repair in a set of very personal pieces, while photographer Vinca Petersen’s images revisit Ukraine in much happier times.
Look out too for a photo feature exploring the experiences of Black modern men; visits to fictional palaces in our Paper Gallery feature; Toyin Ojih Odutola’s continued series of original pencil drawings; Rachel Maclean’s essential studio recipe; designer Roksanda Ilinčić’s 5 essential items; and novelist Amina Cain’s revelation of the art work that changed her life
